Fire Destroys New Concord Home

No one was injured in a fire in New Concord this afternoon but an elderly woman’s home has been destroyed.

At about 1 p.m., crews from New Concord, Adamsville, Perry Township and Cassell station responded to a structure fire at 81-80 friendship drive. the woman in the home was helped out by a medic crew and was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. no one else was in the home. at this time, authorities are not sure what caused the fire, or where it originated.

"The structure was pretty well involved when we got here,” said New Concord Fire Department Chief Brent Gates. “We’ve docked down most of the fire, we couldn’t get near the structure because of some downed power lines on the south side. We just now got the power company to come and to turn the power lines off, We are starting to go in overhaul mode, and tearing a porch off or two, to get better access to completely put the fire out and be able to tell more."

Initially, the woman was refusing to leave the home, because she was fearful for her animals lives.

"The dog and a cat I’ve seen both, but I don’t know if she had others. But I haven’t been able to talk to her, make sure she was taken care of. You can replace buildings, you can’t replace people."

The home appears to be a total loss. The fire remains under investigation.
