The Licking County Sheriff’s Office said a local citizen brought a possible explosive device to their building.

In a press release the sheriff’s office said that around 11a.m. Wednesday, Gary Jones brought a device that resembled a WWII era hand grenade to the sheriff’s office for disposal.

He had found the object while helping a friend with cleaning out his home. Once the officer learned of the situation he had Jones leave the device in his truck as a precaution until professional assistance could come take a look at it.

Sheriff’s Office employees formed a perimeter around the parking lot and closed the jail to visitation until the Columbus Bomb Squad arrived.

The device was collected and removed.

The sheriff’s office said they’re unsure if the device was live or not. The scene was cleared without incident.
