Local children learned the laws of the road Saturday.

It’s Bicycle Awareness Week and in honor of that, Genesis Trauma Services had a bicycle safety day. The students went through different courses where they got their brakes checked, chains oiled and air in their tires.Trauma and Injury Coordinator,Rebecca Geyer says the students response was positive.

"They’ve been super excited. My daughter has been talking about it for days. I know some of the kids here have been talking about it for days, just really excited to bring their bikes out and get a free helmet," said Geyer.

The students learned about proper braking, using proper hand signals, and how to pay attention for cars. Geyer says that many accidents with children happen on bikes and that is why programs like this are important.

" Even just walking through the communities in the past couple of days you see a lot of kids out with their bikes already this summer, but not a lot of helmets. We’re hoping to increase that," said Geyer.

The children saw a demonstration with an unprotected egg that represented their brain without a helmet. Genesis partnered with the American Academy of Pediatrics and Walmart to get free helmets to the kids and make this event possible.
