The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration started their "Click it or Ticket" campaign Monday, a campaign designed to increase seat belt usage and to prevent people from fatal accidents on the roadways.

"Seatbelts are the best way to reduce injury or prevent injury in the event of a traffic crash. It just takes a second to do. We try and reiterate that through public media releases, through speaking and then also with enforcement," said Lt. Matt Boyd of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Lt. Boyd says 11 people were killed in Ohio from driving accidents last Memorial Day weekend. He says there are typically more crashes Memorial Day weekend because it marks the beginning of the summer, and the end of a long winter.

"Just to show how important we feel the weekend is for people to be safe, everyone at the post is scheduled to work this weekend. Including all my supervisors, my sergeants and myself will be out all weekend."

According to the Centers for Disease Control, your chances of surviving a car accident improve by more than 50 percent when wearing a seatbelt and by over 75 percent in a rollover accident. Lt. Boyd advises drivers to also be cautious of motorcyclists and other drivers on the roadway this summer.
