Expiration dates, defective models, and deterioration are not common words you may think of when buckling up your child.

The Zanesville Muskingum County Health Department is providing a car seat program that teaches parents the ins and outs of car seat safety. Certified car seat technician, Laurie Coplin says that there are misconceptions when it comes to proper car seat safety including when they expire.

"There’s usually good for about 6 years from the date of manufacturer and there should be a date stamped on the car seat on the back of it on the plastic. You really need to pay attention to that because you don’t want to be using something unsafe for your child, " said Coplin.

Coplin says some parents believe the more you pay for your car seat the better it will perform. She says this is not true and through the car seat program you can receive a car seat free of charge. Proper installation could be the difference between life and death.

" If they are not properly installed you run a risk of your child being injured or killed in accident so its really important to have your child installed in the seat properly ," said Coplin.

To schedule a car seat inspection or educational class you can call the Zanesville Muskingum County Health Department.
