Muskingum County is making an attempt to make its residents more informed and protect them in case of emergency through a new system.
Three years ago the Muskingum County Emergency Management Agency and other entities started to look for a system that could do mass notifications to the public 24 hours a day day 7 days a week.
"This way we can make sure that they are notified of any type of an incident that’s going on in their area or their residence or families residence," said Director of the EMA Bo Keck.
By joining this system residents can be alerted of power and water outages, traffic information and alerts from law enforcement. It also asks if the resident has any special needs.
"If you have someone in your house that has special needs. If they are power dependent, if they are on a respirator or something like that or if they are elderly and in a wheel chair you can select that and again not just those people, but their family can be notified," said Keck.
Residents with special needs will show up on a map to emergency personnel as a blue dot that way responders know what homes to check. To opt-in to the alerts residents only needs to log on to the EMA’s website, choose what alerts you’d like to receive, up to five addresses you care about and how you’d like to be notified.
