Maysville Middle School student Matthew Pitcock, outspelled 69 other spellers at the Ohio Regional Spelling Bee in March, securing him a spot in the National Spelling Bee coming up on Tuesday.

"I competed in a school bee my 4th and 5th grade year and in my 6th and 7th grade year I went to regionals and did not win there, and then this year I won regionals and I made it to go on to nationals," said Pitcock.

Pitcock says he first became interested in spelling bee’s after he saw an advertisement in a library newsletter when he was in 2nd grade. If he wins he will receive $30,000 and $10,000 in scholarships. He says the hardest words to spell aren’t what you would think.

"A bunch of people would probably say the really long words but I’d probably have to say short words from foreign languages because there’s exceptions to the rules."

Pitcock leaves for the spelling bee on Sunday and will compete with more than 300 students.
