Zane State Oil & Gas Lab

The simulated oil and gas field is located right outside the Cambridge campus and is designed to give students a hands on experience of what it’s like working in the oil industry, something that field trips can’t do.

"We do take a lot of field trips out to actual drill sights and other activity in the oil and gas industry that’s going on, but when you go to these sights you really can’t do hands-on because of liability and not wanting to get anyone hurt," said Mike Whitson, Dean of the Zane State College-Cambridge Campus.

Whitson says the pipes that carry the oil underneath the ground purposely have holes in them so students can learn about leak detection and will also learn how to operate the pump jack that extracts the oil and gas from below the ground.

"We’re providing a fundamental education that’s pretty broad based. They can actually go to work for the oil and gas companies but also to suppliers and subcontractors."

Whitson says the land lab wouldn’t have been possible without the help of donors.
