Coming into the 2013 state finals, the Newark Catholic Green Wave hadn’t won a championship since 2006. That wait finally ended on Sunday.

Behind a dominate performance by Mitch Cox on the mound the Green Wave got just enough runs to earn the school’s seventh state championship. Cox gave up one run in the first inning and from there on out was in control. He scattered eight hits while striking out seven but until the third inning he trailed 1-0.

In the bottom of the third Hunter Nance got Newark Catholic on the board with an RBI single to center which brought home David Meurer and the Green Wave tied it up. The game statyed that way until Meurer came calling again in the bottom of the fourth.

With Conor Keck on second and two outs, Meurer took a fastball into right center field for an RBI double to give the Green Wave a 2-1 lead. It was the nine hitter’s only hit of the game and it came at one of the biggest moments of the game. Meurer would be stranded on second but Newark Catholic had the lead.

From there it was solid defense and Cox on the mound that got the job done. Springfield threatend in the sixth and seventh but Cox was able to dance out of danger with the help of his defense. In the sixth he induced a ground ball to James Thomas who threw to third to tag out a runner trying to advance, and Newark Catholic got out of the inning with the lead intact.

Newark Catholic got in trouble in the seventh after a lead off walk, and a sacrfice bunt moved a runner to second with one out. Cox again rose to the challenge after the runner moved to third on a gound out to Thomas, Cox induced a game ending pop up to Chayce Crouch to end it.

For Newark Catholic it was the school’s seventh baseball title in school history, and for their coach John Cannizzaro it was his fifth at the school. Cannizzaro now has the most state titles in Ohio High School Baseball history and he has won 50 percent of the state tournaments he has been too. The Green Wave end the season at 24-10 and outscored opponents in the tournament 110-8. They averaged nearly 14 runs a contest in eight tournament games this postseason.
