Seniors have an opportunity to receive fresh produce through the Ohio Senior Farmer’s Market Program.

The program provides coupons to low income seniors so that they can purchase fresh fruits and vegetables free of charge. An applicant must be over 60 years of age, fall under the income guidelines, and live in Muskingum County. Support Services Director at the Muskingum County Center for Seniors Debra K. Smith says the program benefits the seniors and the community.

" Part of the reason for that is that it does help area farmers out as well, " said Smith.

Each family or individual receives ten, five dollar coupons in their book and they can be used at any farmer’s station that states that the coupons are accepted. Smith says the applications are first come first serve.

"If they wanted to apply we are going to start taking applications at 12:30 p.m.. until 3 p.m.. this Friday, June the 14th. They can be here as early as they want to be in line, " said Smith.

The center for seniors has 93 booklets available and wants to thank the sponsors who make this program possible including the Ohio Department of Aging and the USDA. This is the third year for the program in Muskingum County
