As expected, Muskingum County’s investments continue to not gain much growth due to the economy.

Monday afternoon was the monthly Investment Committee meeting between the County Commissioners and the Treasurer’s Office. The two entities, discussed the current state of these investments, which county operations depend on. However, more importantly, there is a critical tax date coming up in the next week.

"The most important thing right now is to get your taxes paid,” said Muskingum County Treasurer Carol Friel. “July 5th is the due date for real estate taxes and July 12th is the date for manufactured homes. The courthouse is closed on July 4th, but we are open on July 5th, so that you can come and make your payments."

Taxes help the county’s accounts because the investments will be able to finally earn interest. If you do not pay your taxes on time, you will be subject to steep late fines.

"They are charged interest, they have a 5% fee for the first ten days that they are delinquent and after that it is 10 percent. So you really want to get it paid. It’s so important and we need the money to help operate the county."

There is a drop box within the County Treasurer’s Office to drop off your tax checks and receipts.
