A local concert band is finding ways to raise money for its expenses.

The Zanesville Memorial Concert Band has performed for the community free of charge to the public since 1923 and has no intentions of stopping, but earlier today the band had their very first chicken dinner fundraiser to offset the cost of providing salaries for the musicians.

" We were afraid we weren’t going to make payroll so we decided that Zanesville High School Athletic Boosters did the chicken for us. We had that today at the fairgrounds from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and we sold 153 chickens," said President of the Board for ZMCB, Charlotte Smith.

After seeing the success of the dinner, Smith says that next year they will have another one. In addition to that she says she will talk to local businesses about the importance of the arts and see if they are interested in donating.

" What would we do without music to me it’s a statement of life. I love music, so if we didn’t have this musicians and the backing for them it wouldn’t exist, " said Smith.

During the concert Smith personally thanked some of the band’s biggest sponsors for their contributions.
