What has more than 2,000 likes, 10,000 page views this week alone, and is helping local law enforcement, the Zanesville Police Department’s Facebook page.

The department created the page two months ago and since its induction, Its had a direct impact on criminals.

"The very first day that we started the Facebook page we posted some of the most wanted pictures. The people actually came in and turned themselves in and surrendered themselves on the first day," said Lieutenant of the Zanesville Police Department, Bill Shaw.

Lieutenant Shaw notes that recently three people have been captured directly from Facebook notifications and private messages sent to the police. The Zanesville Police Department adopted the idea of creating an account from another agency in Ohio that uses the social networking site to serve warrants. Shaw says that their department is taking the page a step further by using it to reach out to the community.

" We’re also putting some public service information on there such as the Maple Avenue ramp closing. We want to get the word out there about possible problems or scams,"said Shaw.

Shaw says that they set filters to deter negative comments, he said overall he believes there has been a 99 percent approval rating from the community.
