In efforts to stay healthy, some people have turned to electronic cigarettes as an alternative for smoking.

Although electronic cigarettes contain less chemicals than traditional tobacco based cigarettes, the health benefits are minimal.

"I think they both have their concerns a lot of people think they can use electronic cigarettes and stop smoking, but they have to remember the main addicting substance is nicotine and that’s what’s in the electronic cigarette, " said Medical Director at Zanesville Muskingum County Health Department, Vicki Whitacre.

Whitacre says electronic cigarettes have not been FDA approved and many brands contain toxins that are harmful to the human body. She also says that the these new cigarettes are a potential threat to the youth.

"There are a lot of concern that electronic cigarettes are actually hooking our children on cigarettes and nicotine because they are flavored and they can be bought over the counter," said Whitacre.

Whitacre says if you would like to quit smoking there is a toll free quit line offered on their website, as well as counseling through the Rambo center here in town.
