Muskingum University President, Anne Steele, welcomed about 450 new students at the university’s yearly convocation Tuesday morning and students even got a few words of advice from an alumnus who emphasized to them the importance of personal responsibility.

"There are a lot of opportunities to really, really do well; it’s a terrific college education," said alumnus Prashant Gupta. "And you have a tremendous amount of resources available to you and you can really make an absolute wonderful education out of it, but people have to make choices and a conscious decision to work hard and make the right choices, and the world’s open to you. "

Another purpose for the convocation is for faculty recognition. Vice President of Academic Affairs, James Callaghan, presented awards to faculty members and says it’s a great time for students to meet the university’s distinguished faculty.

"It’s always interesting to see the students reaction because ya know they’re coming from high schools and so this is an event that is very, very different to them," said Callaghan. "And probably at first, they’re probably thinking, ‘ok what is this and what’s going on here?’ and then I think, I hope that they’re impressed by it all and I hope that we give them a good insight as to what our institution is about."

Muskingum University has just over 3,000 students enrolled.
