We are only mere days away from one the largest local events of the year, The Muskingum County Fair!
The fair starts this Sunday, August 11th and there will be the annual attractions of food, games, competitions and of course animals but this year will boast a new feature as well. A steel drum band!
This type of music may make you think of cruises and tropical vacations but it actually has a deeper history.
"But the nature of the instruments, it is a very expressive instrument,” said Jonathan Kelsey, the Director of Bands East Muskingum Schools. “An instrument that was developed out of nothing, it was a way for people in Trinidad and Tobago to express themselves, which makes it a very simplistic instrument to learn, it is a very easy instrument to pick up its a matter of shaping the ensemble."
The band, Pangaea will be playing twice at the fair, once on Sunday around 3 p.m. and again on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. to open for the Demolition Derby. The band was established only this past may through John Glenn High School.
"It is a full orchestra that goes all the way from the base pans to the lead pans. We are group that is prepared to be a satellite group for the school. We are available to do corporate picnics and such, we are an extension of the band program, much like our JG Company, which is our choir group and String Sounds, our orchestral group."
If you are interested in having Pangaea play for your special event, you can contact the John Glenn office at 740-826-7641 and ask for Kelsey and he will be able to set it up.
