Community leaders met at the Zanesville- Muskingum County Chamber of Commerce Thursday night to discuss the issue of literacy in Zanesville.
Representatives from the U.S.Chambers of Commerce and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation selected Zanesville as a location for potential funding .
"We are here today to talk with teachers, administrators, parents, business leaders and non profit organizers to discuss Zanesville, to discuss literacy and see what solutions we can come up with to improve literacy," said Caitlin Codella, U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
During the meeting attendees shared information, checked statistics and brainstormed ways to improve literacy rates in the area. Codella says improving literacy could also improve the economy and strengthen the community as a whole.
" It’s an issue that businesses care deeply about because they are the end users of our education system. They are the ones that are hiring our students out of school, " said Codella.
Follow up meetings will be put in place if the community of Zanesville and the Dollar General Foundation decide to partner together in the future.
