Over a thousand children are now ready for the school year to begin.
Thursday was distribution day for the Lace Up for Kids Campaign. In its 25th year the program helped 1,196 children. That’s about 150 more than last year.
Eastside Community Ministry said they began buying shoes in January to get ready and said the program really helps neighbors in need.
"The original logo of Lace Up was let kids start up on the right foot and I think that’s it to feel like I’m going into school on even keel with everybody else," said Eastside Community Ministry’s Sally Goins. "It helps everybody have a more confident attitude."
Goins said that there is pressure to make sure they have enough shoes, but they always have a few extras on hand just in case. She said this work couldn’t be done without volunteers.
"I think if you asked any one of the volunteers they would tell you that it is just heartwarming. It’s very satisfying," said Goins.
Distribution day ends at 5 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Whiz Media Group, Wendy’s and Eastside Community Ministries.
