Thousands of Dollars Donated to Eastside

An assembly line of workers busily filled backpacks for this year’s Eastside Community Ministry’s "Tools For School" Campaign.

Stacks of folders, pencils and paper carefully made their way into over 800 backpacks. These packs will be given away during an even Thursday. Eastside estimates that each backpack is worth $35.

"We struggle to do this every year, but we get a lot of donations money wise and school supplies, but it’s still a struggle. There’s always more need," said Co-Chair for the Tools for School Project Betsy Thomas.

This year the campaign got some help. For every car McHugh Dodge Jeep Chrysler sold in July $50 was donated to Eastside. That money was matched was matched by Zanesville native and Minnesota Timberwolves’ guard Kevin Martin. A total of $9,500 was raised.

"I wish I could have given more. I feel pretty good. It was a substantial amount of money to raise for them," said Tim McHugh. "It didn’t pay for everything that they did. It’s just a good start for them."

McHugh also donated some of his time getting a taste of what the volunteers go through. He packed backpacks alongside the others saying the amount of things need is mind boggling.

The backpacks will be distributed between 8:30-11 on Thursday for those that registered.
