You only get one chance to make a good first impression, and both the Zanesville and West Muskingum boys were trying to do that Saturday afternoon. The two soccer teams squared off in Crew Stadium in Columbus for their opener, and the Blue Devils came away winners.
After a bit of a slow start for both teams, seniors Noah Vincent and Zach Scott put in first half goals to give Zanesville a 2-0 lead at the half. Both sides regrouped and seemed to play much more controlled soccer in the final 40 minutes.
The Tornadoes got a break early on in the half when senior captain Zack Kimble was fouled in the box. Kimble calmly stepped up and slotted the PK in the left corner to bring the score to 2-1.
But the Devils didn’t look back from there. Zanesville went on to score three more goals, including two by sophomore Austin Blatt, to put things out of reach. Junior captain Doug Welker added the final insurance goal and the Devils went on to win by a score of 5-1. It marked the first win for Zanesville at Crew Stadium.
