In honor of 9/11, first responders in Muskingum County were treated to a free lunch Wednesday afternoon.

Police, Ohio State Highway Patrol, EMS, Firefighters and other first responders enjoyed a cookout at the YMCA Park Central put on by the College Guides of Scholarship Central, a branch of AmeriCorp.

"Working for AmeriCorp, we have to do a certain number of service projects and September 11th was one," said Coulton Waite, an AmeriCorp College Guide. "And we thought a cookout for the first responders and also kind of a way to remember September 11th, would be a good idea."

Students from Zanesville High School’s Key Club volunteered at Wednesday’s event, along with the Muskingum Valley Red Cross. Emergency Management Agency Director Bo Keck, said he’s thankful to have an event like this.

"It’s nice to get everyone together. It doesn’t matter what shirt you’re wearing or what uniform you’re wearing at an event like this and again, we all get to come together and enjoy lunch and socialize a little bit," said Keck.

This was the second year for the event. Last year about 100 people showed up and Waite said he hopes to reach even more first responders next year.
