Free Flu Shots For Muskingum County Residents

Flu season is approaching and getting your yearly flu shot is one way to stay healthy all winter long.

The Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department recently purchased 2,000 flu vaccines with levy-money and they’re having a free flu shot clinic for Muskingum County residents. The one-day flu clinic will  be held at the Muskingum County Fairgrounds on October 10.

"We ask that if people have a severe latex allergy or a severe allergy to eggs or if in the past when they had previous flu vaccines, if they had the Guillan-Barre response, to not come to our flu clinic. Instead, have the conversation with their primary care physician," said Director of Nursing Carol Howdyshell.

Howdyshell said getting the flu vaccine is the best thing you can do to protect yourself from getting the virus, but notes constantly washing your hands with warm water, keeping a healthy diet and covering your mouth while sneezing or coughing into your elbow, helps stop the spread of germs. The flu clinic isn’t just a way to give back to the community, the health department actually uses the event as an opportunity to practice their emergency preparedness plan.

"If anything happened, could we pull our partners together? If we had to reach people in the he community in a short amount of time, can we do it? And so we use this exercise to practice that and we traditionally have always used the flu vaccine because that’s very meaningful to the community. That’s a very good give-back as we practice this."

The free flu clinic is from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., or until the vaccine runs out. The clinic is available only to Muskingum County residents and is available for residents ages 3 and older. You do not need to bring identification, but you must complete a consent form with your home address on it to get yourself vaccinated.
