Beware Of Giving Your Dogs Jerky Treats

The Food and Drug Administration is investigating what has caused nearly 600 deaths and more than 36,000 illnesses in dogs. The FDA believes the outbreaks of illness are jerky treats produced in China, but are still unsure what brands. The Muskingum County Animal Shelter Society’s Executive Director Jody Murray wants to warn pet owners to be cautious until there’s more information.

"Certainly if you’re using any of the jerky treats, watch for any gastrointestinal or kidney issues," said Murray. "What they’re recommending is if you have an animal that’s having those symptoms, take it to your vet and also take the product with you, seal it up take it with you so the vet can get that and correspond with the FDA."

Murray said if pet owners are concerned or have other questions, they can get updates on the issue by going online to the FDA’s website.

"There’s a whole division in the FDA that’s in vetrinary medicine and just stay up-to-date on that, just read that periodically and get an update. It’s one of those things they don’t know what the cause is at this point so i think just being cautious the best advice."

The treats are believed to be produced in China, so it’s important to either steer clear from buying jerky treats, or thoroughly read the label and ingredients on the treats you buy your pooch.
