There are only a few weeks left to get your locally grown produce at the Zanesville Farmer’s Market downtown.
Next Wednesday is the final Wednesday Farmers Market until next spring however the Saturday Farmers Market will continue through October until the final Saturday of the month.
"In the past, we always went to the end of September but we have been fortunate the weather has held out,” said President Mark Barnhart., “We still have some stuff even though it has been a bad year, so as long as we’ve got produce, Bill’s got apples, I’ve got apples, we just try to go a little longer. "
Locally grown produce is higher quality than most stores because the fruits and vegetables sold Wednesday at the farmers market were picked just hours before being sold, meaning the produce will last longer once you purchase it.
"But you figure cucumbers from California are three days old when they get here, they may sit in a warehouse a day or two before they go to the store, they may sit in a back room for a day or two before they get out on the display case and these were picked yesterday and they will still last two weeks in the refrigerator."
Some products that have a long shelf life are cabbage, turnips, beets, and during this weather, tomatoes last longer due to thicker skin. Eggplant and snow peas will last about a week and green beans will last about two weeks.
