A local funeral home employee is also the recipient of a prestigious service award.

Jeff Hardwick works as Managing Partner at Bryan and Snider Funeral Home, while simultaneously providing services to the Central Ohio Lions Eye Bank. Hardwick has volunteered for the group for more than 25 years and was given the 2013 Outstanding Service State Award for his work as an eye nucleator.

"I’m called out at different hours," said Award Recipient, Jeff Hardwick. I’m kind of subcontracted by the Central Ohio Lions Eye Bank, then I will go to the location where the person has died and recover that eye tissue."

Hardwick says he had no idea that he was receiving the award, and the real enjoyment comes from helping people with corneal damage or disease.

"Oh it’s wonderful," said Hardwick. I mean that’s the best part about it is being able to help in that mission of helping people have their eye site again. "

Hardwick says that there is no cost to patients or to donors receiving corneal transplants. To become a donor of organ tissue, people can check yes on the donor box when signing up for or renewing their license.
