Licking County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a medical emergency call at 5:47 a.m. Sunday morning on Fallsburg Road in Newark.

According to the Licking County Sheriff’s Office, when deputies arrived, a man with a gun shot wound to his leg notified them that Christopher Taylor shot him and said Taylor was also holding the homeowners of 11222 Fallsburg Rd. hostage inside their home. The man was treated by medical personnel for non-life threatening injuries.

Officials said after four hours of negotiation, the Hostage Negotiation Team and SWAT unit were able to convince Taylor to release the hostages unharmed. Once the hostages were released, Taylor refused to exit the home, officials said. The SWAT unit released tear gas into the home and took Taylor into custody without incident. Taylor was transported to Licking Memorial Hospital. No other names are being released and it is unclear how many hostages there were. The incident remains under investigation.
