Postseason Matchups to Watch For: Boys and Girls Soccer

As the regular season winds down, the postseason is just around the corner for many local teams. Let’s take a peak at some key matchups for teams in the days and weeks ahead. Below are the dates and times, along with What to Watch For (W2W4) in each.

High School Boys Soccer:

Div. 2 Warsaw District
#6 Philo vs. #8 West Muskingum
Oct. 14, 7 pm, River View HS
W2W4: The Electrics picked up one of their three wins this season on the road against the Tornadoes. On a neutral field, look for Philo to use space and get on the board early. West M’s Zach Kimble can be a difference maker in the midfield, but Philo will play inspired soccer for their absent head coach Matt Brown.

#3 John Glenn vs. Philo/West Muskingum winner
Oct. 16, 7 pm, River View HS
W2W4: The Muskies have dominated possession in the majority of their MVL games this season, which is much of the reason why they are undefeated in the league (until Tuesday night). Senior Ross Matthews will be back (red card against Tri-Valley) and hungry for a postseason run. Philo knocked them off 2-1 Tuesday, so it goes without saying that the Electrics can pull it off.

Div. 1 Central District 2
#27 Zanesville vs. #26 Delaware Hayes
Oct. 16, 7 pm, Delaware Hayes HS
W2W4: The Blue Devils have played toughed against Division I opponents this season (3-1-1), but they will be tested on the road with the season on the line. Sophomore midfielder Austin Blatt needs to spread the field, and the defense can’t make mistakes in order for Zanesville to advance.

Div. 3 Jackson District
#3 Bishop Rosecrans vs. #2 Steubenville Central Catholic
Oct. 16, 6:30 pm, Maysville HS
W2W4: The Bishops have played well against bigger schools, including a 3-0 record against the MVL. They will be equally matched against division opponents this postseason. Rosecrans will practically play a home game at Maysville High School, that may be the edge they need to move on.

High School Girls Soccer:

Div. 1 Central District 4
#23 Tri-Valley vs. #27 Zanesville
Oct. 15, 7 pm. Tri-Valley HS
W2W4:The Lady Scotties won the only meeting this season, 5-2, way back on August 17th. Both teams have come a long way since then, but Tri-Valley may have more offensive firepower (scored 3 or more goals in 8 games this season).  Hilliard Darby awaits the winner.

Div. 2 Cambridge District
John Glenn vs. Philo
Oct. 14, 7:15 pm, Philo HS
W2W4: The Lady Muskies won the first season meeting 3-0, but the Lady Electrics have played better in the second half of the season at home. It will be the second game between the schools in five days, so whichever team adjusts more from Thursday’s game may be the winner.

Div. 3 Zanesville 1 District
#2 Bishop Rosecrans vs. #5 Berlin Hiland
Oct. 15, 7 pm, West Muskingum HS
W2W4: The Lady Bishops have one of the best records in the area at 13-2, their only losses came to New Philly and Zanesville. Rosecrans beat Hiland 2-0 back at the beginning of September. Both teams are improved, but the Bishops are hot (6 straight wins).
