The Muskingum County Emergency Management Agency dives into social media.
While the agency already has a Facebook page the site doesn’t get much use and there is no presence on Twitter. Plans are in the works to change that with the addition of a social media coordinator.
Currently, full time clerk for the County Commissioners Caitlin Tacker will take care of updating the sites with weather warnings, road closures and any other general information necessary.
"What we’ve learned is the world out there now is social media and people follow Facebook, they follow Twitter," said Muskingum County EMA Director Bo Keck. "It’s important to get notifications out to the public right away besides our Reverse 911 and the other options we have."
It also is a way for the public to communicate with the EMA.
"There’s ways for the public to let us know of things that have been going on or if we do have an incident to get information back to us," said Keck. "That’s again why we need a separate person to do this."
Keck said it was also important to get a separate employee to tack social media because in an emergency current EMA employees are too busy dealing with the situation itself to update the social media pages.
