On Sunday, 13-year-old Maysville Middle School student Jared Helsel, lost his battle with Ewings Sarcoma, a rare bone cancer. Southtown Gym Manager Abbie Williams, who also went to Maysville Schools, heard of Jared’s story on Facebook and decided to put together a 5K and 1 mile walk to honor Jared.
"I talked to a family friend and she was very appreciative," explained Williams. "Anything that we can do to help. I’m a mother and I can’t imagine having to worry about financial burdens when losing a child. So I felt like this was the very least we could do to help them out with that."
The 5K will start at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30 at Southtown Gym on Maysville Pike. The entry fee for adults is $15 and $10 for students. Williams encourages participants to pre-register starting on Nov. 20. Williams says even if you’re not interested in participating, you’re more than welcome to stop by pay respect to Jared and the courageous battle he fought.
"I think anything would be helpful especially just to help his family with obviously the financial things of just losing somebody, but also the holiday’s are coming up and also not only money, just to have people kind of congregate here and remember him and maybe share some memories and just kind of celebrate his life and tell stories."
One hundred percent of the proceeds will go directly to Helsel family. Also, $1 from all smoothie sales at Southtown Gym will go to the family. The 5K will go on rain or shine, snow or sleet. You can call Southtown Gym at 740-455-2639 for more information.
