After a three year fight with cancer,a Maysville Middle School student is no longer here but his memory will live on forever.
On Saturday more than 70 community members met at Southtown Gym for a 5K run and 1 mile walk to benefit 13- year-old, Jared Hesel who recently lost his battle with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare bone cancer. His mom says that he was a fighter and that is how people will remember her son.
"He was determined from the day he found out he had something that he had to beat and clear up to the day that he died he never gave up. He always fought, he was 100 percent determined to finish whatever he started, " said Jared’s mother, Niki Hesel.
Manager of the gym and fellow Maysville Alumni, Abbie Willams says she was inspired by Jared’s Journey and she decided to help by coordinating the event for the family. Jared’s mother says she couldn’t be more grateful.
"I am really really happy about today. I am happy that everybody is coming out and they are showing their support for not only Jared but for me and the family and the loss of him and they are also celebrating his life and what he stood for, " said Hesel.
All of the proceeds raised from the registration fees, and smoothie purchases on Saturday will go directly to the Hesel family to pay for Jared’s final costs. If you would like to send your condolences you can visit the "Join Jared’s Journey" page on Facebook.
