Muskingum University in New Concord was evacuated and closed on Thursday after a bomb threat.

Muskingum County Emergency Management Agency Director Bo Keck says that at around 12:45 p.m. the school received a bomb threat via the university’s 1-800 number. Officials asked all students, faculty and visitors to vacate the premises in order to facilitate a campus wide investigation.

"We are now in the process of searching buildings, searching dorms and checking every place we can. We do have bomb dogs on the scene and they are checking certain buildings, " said Keck.

Keck says the threat did not mention any locations, times or information that would aid them in their investigation, however the school’s IT department was able to trace the phone number from where the call originated.

"With the phone number that we have if we can track that down quick enough hopefully we can get a hold of the person made that call pretty quick and make an arrest and then we are okay, " said Keck.

Muskingum University Director of Public Relations Janice Tucker McCloud says all events including the men’s and women’s basketball games are canceled for Thursday evening. Students were told via text not to return until Friday Morning. Mccloud says students with no off-campus housing will be taken to hotels if needed. The Muskingum Valley Red Cross is on scene to provide water and snacks to those evacuated. The Muskingum County Sheriffs’ Office is helping Muskingum University and New Concord Police and Fire departments in the investigation. On campus residence halls will reopen at 6:30 Friday morning.  Classes are expected to resume Friday at 8 a.m.  Late Thursday evening Keck reported the bomb sweep was complete and nothing was found.
