The Nelson T. Gant Foundation is celebrating the heroism of local African American Veterans.

Friday morning at 11 a.m at the Gant House they will host their 3rd annual Veteran’s Day Program. The event will feature refreshments and a panel of veterans from different decades and wars.

"I think the farthest back will be a speaker from the Vietnam era and on up until the present, but there maybe some people in the audience who have experiences prior to Vietnam War they may want to share some information too, " said Foundation Treasurer, Anita Jackson.

The event will also acknowledge the sacrifices and hardships that soldiers often went through at war and the racism that many African American soldiers faced.

"They weren’t able to have certain types of jobs," said Jackson. They were always assigned things like cooks and my dad was in the navy so scrubbing the deck those are the kind of positions they had. "

The program is free and open to the public and the foundation encourages people to come out and learn some important sometimes forgotten history.
