Winter does not officially arrive for eleven more days but the thermometer tells a different story. . .
High temperatures throughout this week will only be in the twenties. With temperatures well below freezing, you need to be sure you are keeping your body safe from two dangerous scenarios.
"Hypothermia is just extreme loss of body temperature,” explained Epidemiologist, Kristen Baker. “Your organs kind of slow down, they start to shut down, you are not going to think as well, you are not going to make good judgment calls, so because of that, people that have hypothermia might not even realize they have it and that’s why it poses such danger."
The warning signs of hypothermia include sluggish movements, exhaustion, slurred speech and shivering. Shivering is the body’s way to stay warm but it also the first sign you need to get someplace warm. The other danger in cold weather is frostbite.
“The signs for frostbite would be numbness or tingling in your extremities. You are going to get frostbite in your ears, your nose, your cheek, your chin; because it exposed to the weather and then your fingers and toes cause they are far from your heart. So your extremities are most at risk for frostbite.
