Donations Needed At The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is in desperate need of help from the community.

They operate primarily on grant money and from the support of the public, and every Christmas they provide presents for thousands of children and food for over 600 families. But this year, their stock of gifts and food is running low. Major Diane Campbell is asking the community to support the Salvation Army this Christmas by helping local families in need.

"I’m looking if they can support us with some food, some canned goods, some macaroni and cheeses, some of those staples," explained Campbell. "We also provide chicken or turkey for the large families. Also, if they want to donate they can because sometimes, now we have to go and negotiate those prices, any kind of help would be appreciated."

Campbell says they’ll be collecting new presents like toys and clothing for newborns and children up to age 12. On December 19, the presents and food baskets will be distributed to area families, so donations are needed as quickly as possible.

"We’re usually here from 8-4:30 p.m. and sometimes in the evenings. If they come through on the weekend, my shelter is manned 24/7 so there is somebody here."

Families were selected in October through an application process based on employment and financial need among other criteria. The Salvation Army is located at 515 Putnam Ave.
