The local community said its final goodbyes to one of it’s most influential members.

Mourners watched as the funeral procession for 28 year veteran of the South Zanesville Fire Department and former South Zanesville Mayor, Dick Guss passed by. One woman says her grandson worked with Guss at the fire department and is devastated by the loss of such a well respected man and hero in the community.

"What can you say..I mean what can you say." said Donna Barker. He passed on doing something that he loved doing and I feel really bad for the family that they have to go through this. "

The funeral took place at Memorial Park Cemetery where family, multiple public safety organizations and more than 30 fire departments, met to remember Guss’ contributions to South Zanesville and the county. Muskingum County Sheriff, Matt Lutz says he has known Guss for at least 20 years and his memory will live on forever.

"I don’t know if you could ever find another Dick Guss, said Sheriff Lutz. Dick was a matter of fact type of guy, he was a to the point type of guy and you knew where you stood with him. He had a good sense of humor good personality. "

During the funeral, firefighters set off fire alarms and Guss’ name and radio number were called out one last time. Med flight also circled above the cemetery in remembrance of the fallen hero who lost his life in the line of duty.
