The Village of South Zanesville is mourning the loss of a firefighter and mayor Sunday evening.

According to South Zanesville Fire Chief, Norm Mansfield and Chris Kerby,  The Fiscal Officer of the Village of South Zanesville, Terry Richard Guss, has tragically died following injuries sustained after a fall.

Kerby confirmed, that around 12:30 on Friday morning, after battling a house fire, Guss slipped from the running board of Engine 1415. He landed on his back and struck his head on the apparatus bay floor. He was taken to the hospital by Newton Township EMS, initially alert and in little pain.

However, CT scans told another story. It was determined he had a few small bleeds on his brain. He was moved to the Intensive Care Unit because the bleeds enlarged. Emergency surgery was done to relieve the pressure on his brain. Following surgery, the prognosis did not look good.

Kerby said the mayor was removed from life support and passed away around 1 p.m. Sunday.
