Instead of potentially being put on a waiting list like many other cities across the state, where Public Service Director James Sawyer says "demand is high and the supply is low," the city of Zanesville can now get a head start on the process of ordering more salt to keep roads clear.
"We’re looking at about maybe 1,800 tons of salt," said Sawyer. "But we have storage for only so much so we have to buy in increments. We can’t put it all in one unit that we have for storage and so we have to continually buy throughout the year."
As for whether or not the next order will last for the remainder of winter, Sawyer says, "it all depends on Mother Nature."
"We watch the extended weather forecast very closely, we look at a historical use of salt for example, there’s a lot of factors that go into this process and we do the best we can."
In other council news, council passed an ordinance allowing the city to pay the $114,981.32 invoice for the emergency demolition of the Sixth Street building that caught fire in December. As for now, the funds to pay for the invoice will be taken from the city’s contingency and general fund, but City Law Director Scott Hillis says the city plans on recouping the costs from the property owner. Council also passed an ordinance that will provide the Zanesville-Muskingum County Port Authority with $100,000 worth of funds for organizational, promotional and operational expenses. Council also passed and an ordinance providing the South East Area Transit (SEAT) with $80,000 for 2014. Council will meet again in two weeks.
