The United States Navy will honor a New Concord native at a special ceremony on Saturday.

The Navy will christen their newest Mobile Landing Platform the John Glenn after the famous astronaut.

A Navy spokesperson said that the 786 feet long ship will usher in a new age of the Navy and Marine Corps operations.

The ship will leverage float on/float off technology allowing the John Glenn to partially submerge, to allow for easy movement of cargo and craft. The ship has 25,000 sq ft of vehicle and equipment stowage space, tankage for 100,000 gallons of potable water and 380,000 gallons of fuel.

John Glenn, the legendary astronaut, is the last surviving member of the Mercury 7 crew. He was the first American to orbit the Earth on the Friendship 7 and even flew aboard the Discovery Space Shuttle at the age of 77.
