Deputies from the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office apprehended a thief Wednesday evening after he wrecked his vehicle and jumped into the canal to escape authorities.

According to Lt. Mike LeCocq at around 8 p.m., a call from the Maysville Pike Wal-Mart alerted authorities to a male shoplifter. The man then ran out of the store and fled in an SUV. At about 8:15, a Sheriff’s Deputy came into contact with a vehicle matching the description on Wayne Avenue and attempted to make a traffic stop. The suspect refused to stop and fled, leading several sheriff’s deputies on a pursuit.

During the short chase, the suspect drove between two residences, then crashed his vehicle into an embankment at 7th and Hughes St., near the backside of Goss Supply. The driver took off and jumped into the canal trying to escape deputies, shortly upon landing in the water, the 34-year-old suspect climbed out of the canal and was taken into custody.

The stolen property was found in the vehicle and returned to Wal-Mart. No formal charges will be filed until the case is presented to County Prosecutor Mike Haddox. No one was injured in the pursuit.
