The Muskingum County Commissioners met with County Treasurer, Carol Friel to discuss county investments for the month of February.
Friel says that her office has invested in money market accounts that are earning interest for the county’s general fund . She says the budget is balanced, but her office would like to see funds increase.
"We are happy our investments are earning," said Friel. They are not earning what we would like to be earning, but in this marketplace they are doing well. We are making a little bit of money, we are not losing and that’s what the county needs to be a responsible investor. "
As of now, Friel set the projected budget for fiscal year 2014 at $450,000 and she says that if earnings stay similar to what they are now, the county will be right on target for her projection. Along with the budget Friel says it’s time for people to pay their real estate taxes.
" Tomorrow is the collection day for first half of taxes for real-estate and I wanted to remind everyone to get your taxes paid and you can come to the courthouse and if you get them in the mail and they are postmarked February 28th that makes them on time," said Friel.
Freil says that unpaid taxes can hurt the county and if people have questions about their taxes or would like to pay them they can contact the Treasurer’s Office by phone at (740) 455-7118.
