Heath Animal Shelter Reopens Monday

by George Hiotis on March 17, 2014

Officials will reopen a Licking County animal shelter Monday that closed after a litter of puppies contracted a contagious viral disease and died.  The Licking County Humane Society closed to the public in early March to quarantine and clean the facility if Heath to rid it of any traces of parvovirus.  It says no more animals showed symptoms or tested positive for the virus since the intial outbreak. The disease spreads through animal waste and direct contact between dogs.  It can create intestinal and heart problems for the animals. The shelter will celebrate its reopening by offering drastically reduced adoption fees Monday for dogs and cats that have been awaiting permanent homes for at least three months.
