The Muskingum Recreation Center opens this month and rec leaders are preparing for its big debut.

The center will have a soft opening for current Genesis Lifestyle Fitness Center members on March 24 and will open to the general public on March 31. On Thursday workers inched a step closer to completion by officially filling the rec’s pools with water. The staff at the rec center will offer special classes to interested individuals who are looking for an exciting aquatic job opportunity.

"Pretty soon in March, the last two weekends we will be offering a life guard training for anybody interested in becoming a life guard. It’s a great training to have just because it prepares you for the workforce, it’s for a mature individual. It’s a lot of responsibility but it’s a very rewarding job at the same time," said Aquatic Manager, Susan Bowen.

Organizers say that the pools are only a portion of activities they plan to offer at the Muskingum Rec Center. Phase two of planning will include a racquetball court. The court is estimated to cost five to six hundred thousand dollars to build and the center hopes to use their fundraising skills to make it happen.

"We write proposals. We try to match people up with their interest, there is grant writing. We do a lot of that so there is alot of different ways one goes about fundraising, " said Assistant Dean of Development at OUZ, Cindy Linn.
