For the past 26 years, the Muskingum Family YMCA has been celebrating the achievements of Muskingum County women, and on Wednesday night, friends, family, co-workers and past recipients filled the Zane State/OUZ Campus Center to celebrate the Muskingum Family YMCA’s 2014 Women of Achievement recipients.

To be considered for an award, Mistress of Ceremony Maryjane Bednarczuk said the nominees must be "a person that lives up to the principals of the Y," which include empowering other women and serving as a role model for others.

"Community and family and being a volunteer within your community," said Bednarczuk. "Lots of the awards are based on a professional person, they may be someone in the field of education or health care and then we also have a very special award for a young person which is the Bright Futures award always given to a senior in high school every year.

Bednarczuk went on to explain, "We feel that this is a really positive event. It is really eye opening how much time and attention these women donate to their communities and the many, many lives that they touch. And truly as you leave this room, everyone feels just a little bit more empowered.

Around 300 people attended Wednesday’s award ceremony.
