The Kiwanis Club of Zanesville is preparing for its 4th Annual Corporate Pinewood Derby.

About 25 local businesses will be sponsoring 25 pinewood derby cars at this Thursday’s event. Kevin Pinson, derby chairman for the Kiwanis Club, says the club got the idea for the event from local cub scout packs a few years ago. Each business will be given a car kit and can choose to either build the car themselves or have it built by starlight industries.

"It’s a double elimination race so they have to lose twice," said Pinson. "We have a tournament bracket that we’ll have up on the wall and we’ll just eliminate until we get to the final two cars and have a race off.

Pinson says trophies will be awarded to the first three places and to the business with the best designed car.

"With the race three days away, I think we’re done with our 25 which will raise just over $7,000 for our club. So we’re very pleased with the turnout. This is our biggest race yet."

Pinson says that $7,000 will go towards the club’s youth oriented projects. The derby is this Thursday at 7 p.m. and will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in the Sunrise Center Plaza. If you are interested in attending, Pinson says all they ask for is a donation at the door.
