Planned Removal of Safety Device Concerns Some

Some area officials fear a plan by the Ohio Department of Transportation could have severe consequences for those that travel State Route 60 near Dresden.

A Jefferson Township Trustee said that when he found out ODOT was studying plans to remove the traffic light at State Route 60 and Raiders Road he began to write letters. He along with other trustees and county officials contacted ODOT and State Representatives urging them to keep the light.

"My worst fear is safety," said concerned Jefferson Township Trustee Drake Prouty. "I don’t want to see someone seriously injured or killed because the traffic light was removed."

But, County Commissioners said they received a letter saying a decision had been made to remove the light. Removing the light would make State Route 60 a thru road, while stop signs would be placed on Raiders Road.

It was also suggested that ODOT put in rumble strips to alert motorists of a new traffic pattern.

"I would prefer the light to stay," added Commissioner Jim Porter. "You can’t beat a traffic light. Some people slow down for rumble strips, some don’t."

Prouty, who’s also a member of the Dresden Fire Department, said prior to the installation of the light they responded to several accidents, some fatal on the roadway.

Though traffic in that area is down he fears the safety of those traveling through the area or to the Fanatics Campus when the light is removed.
