A Peace Officer Memorial Service was held by the Fraternal Order of Police at their Lodge on Perry Lane in Zanesville earlier Saturday.

FOP President Wes Elson opened the meeting. Following were comments from both Zanesville Police Chief Kenneth Miller and Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz.
"It’s an amazing fact this year, that we had no officer fatalities in 2013 that we had to add to that monument," stated Sheriff Lutz. "Now we did add one name in 2013 but he passed away from injuries sustained years earlier. So it’s been just an incredible year for us. Anytime we can pay tribute to our fallen officers but celebrate the fact that we didn’t have to add a new name is just incredible. So it was a very good day "
This was also the 20th Anniversary of the passing of Lieutenant Michael J. Lutz, who gave his life in the line of duty. Lutz was the father of Sheriff Matt Lutz.
" It means so much to me with the support that we get," said Sheriff Lutz. "And you know we don’t really need this day because we get that support everyday. But it is nice to meet here. Sometimes it’s the only time you get to see some folks and to pay tribute to our guys that give the ultimate sacrifice. "
The Peace Officer Meeting this weekend coincides with Peace Officer Memorial Week May 11th-17th as well as National Police Week May 15th-21st.
