The May Primary election is just five days away. We now continue our look at the candidates for Muskingum County Probate-Juvenile Court Judge.

Maria Kalis says with more than a decade of experience as a trial lawyer working at Kincaid, Taylor and Geyer and the Muskingum County Prosecutor’s Office , she’s had the opportunity to work with the youth in our area.

" During that time I was in court on a daily basis and I had the unique opportunity to handle and face the very issues that this court faces when I was assigned to the juvenile division both in early in my career and in 2013, " said Kalis.

Along with working with the youth in our area she says that issues that face the probate court hold an equally important place in her personal life.

" My youngest sister Becca has down syndrome and I watched her battle everything for 18 years, her entire life and handle it very successfully. When she turned 18 I watched my parents have to ask a judge if they would be permitted to make decisions for her for the rest of her life, " said Kalis.

As judge, Kalis says she would try to make that process more comfortable for families and also directly tackle the juvenile drug issue in Muskingum County. One of her plans includes the addition of a teen court that would hold juveniles accountable for their actions in hopes of rehabilitation.
