Proper vehicle maintenance is always important, but that’s especially true following a harsh winter.

AAA offered free vehicle inspections to drivers at the Northside Pharmacy on Maysville Pike Wednesday. Kimberly Schwind with AAA said a lot of vehicle breakdowns could be prevented with proper maintenance check-ups.

"People all too often will neglect their maintenance of their vehicle because they want to save money, but what they don’t realize is that could really end up costing you a lot more in the long run," Schwind said.  "Over the winter with the cold weather, we had a record number of breakdowns, and a lot of those, about 40-50%, could have been prevented if people really had just maintained their vehicles."

Workers from AAA and Clever Towing inspected belts, hoses, and tires among other items at the check station. Jennifer Hiestand with the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department was also on hand to help provide information on motorcycle safety.

"We’re just here to spread the word," she said.  "We’re kind of high, Muskingum County is, for motorcycle accidents, unfortunately, this year. So we’re just trying to get the word out for people to share the road with motorcycles."

Folks also had the opportunity to try a texting and driving simulator to see just how dangerous texting behind the wheel can be.
