Area cancer survivors gathered in Zanesville Sunday to celebrate their success and to cheer on those still putting up the fight.

Genesis hosted the annual Celebrate Life event at the HealthPlex on Maple Avenue from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.  Over 100 cancer survivors and those still fighting cancer turned out with family and friends to enjoy free food, door prizes, and entertainment by the Blues Brothers and the St. Paul AME Hmn of Praises.  Lee Murphy was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma two years ago and is down to just three remaining treatments with Genesis.

"They do a great job," Murphy said.  "Everybody down there is wonderful. I’ve had really good success with it, and I’m almost two years into the program now."

Stockport resident Rocky Woodburn is a colon cancer survivor and is now working with Genesis to fight off cancer that has spread to his liver.  Despite having cancer himself, Woodburn recently started a charity to help raise money for others battling cancer, and he’s already raised over $6,000.

"We call it MoCoTeam Blue," Woodburn said.  "We’re helping people with transportation, yard work, anything they need that we can help. I’ve got 14 people now that I’m helping in Morgan County to get them back and forth to treatments, and we’re helping some with medical bills."

Sunday’s Celebrate Life event was held in conjunction with National Cancer Survivors Day.  There are an estimated 14 million Americans who are cancer survivors.
