One of the Muskingum Valley Red Cross’ very best received the Medical Mutual 2014 Outstanding Senior Platinum Volunteer Award for Central Ohio.

Lin Alvendano beat more than 700 other nominees for the title. After retiring from the military with more than 30 years of experience as a combat medic and his career as an administrator for the state, he decided that volunteering was his true passion.

" This is sort of my plan of what I wanted to do when I retired it is sort of giving back to the community and everybody has helped whenever I grew up and it’s just my way of giving back to so many people who have given to me," said Alvendano.

Over the past few years, he has volunteered in places like Louisiana, New York, Alabama and of course Ohio . He volunteers in a variety of disaster situations but one mission trip sticks out most in his mind.

" I was in Mobile Alabama when I discovered a population that had been unfound and they were in need, they were South Vietnamese fisherman that were living in the bayou and nobody knew that they were there, " said Alvendano.

Alvendano is one of the highest trained Action Disaster Team members and uses his expertise to teach and mentor younger volunteers at Red Cross.
